The Genoa (2002) photos are an extension of the Psychasthenia 10 series of night time analogue 35 mm photographs of apartment-buildings in western Europe and the US.
Image 0Harbour is overlooking the Genoa harbour from the site of housing complexes on the hills behind. In Image 0 the subdued and sleepy apartment building that could have been anywhere, is contrasted to the lights of the harbour with its continuous activity and surveillance.
The other three photographs show the Pegli 3 “Le Lavatrici” social housing on the hills by the harbour of Genoa, the buildings appear as a mixture of sci-fi, idealist and medieval buildings cloaked in a “muddy” night sky with a distorted moon. The details of cars and the harbour areas in the distance, and our knowledge of actual apartment structures keeps the image in a material reality of today.
The Genoa series of photographs are included as an image sequence in the film work Filter City from 2023.
